Jewels of Kandahar

Rangina Hamidi – Afghan-American activist & entrepreneur – explains the ancient art of ‘khamak’ embroidery to Kalpana Biswas.

My latest documentary film, “Jewels of Kandahar,” is currently in progress. This documentary tells the story of 400 war-weary Afghan widows and needy women working for a handicrafts business – Kandahar Treasure. Founded by Rangina Hami, the business is located within the spiritual homeland of the notorious Taliban. These brave women are breaking local tradition by earning a living to save their families. With the imminent pull-out of US troops in 2014, where will these women be afterward? The camera follows Rangina and 10 of her women in their fight for survival.
